Editing Originality
Editing originality focuses on the act of making and the objects in this exhibition bridge the divided that separates unique and multiple works. If originality is considered as a process and not as a state-of-being it transforms the way we think and aesthetically engage with works of art. If Matisse’s Jazz can be metaphorically considered as an improvisation, the works by Kurt Schwitters and Dieter Roth are literally performances.
While the exhibition contains many pieces that use cut and torn paper ( Tàpies, Kapoor and Eliasson ) other works experiment with more conventional printing techniques (Goya “ Los desastres de la Guerra” Pablo Picasso “ Sueños y Mentiras de Franco”). Photography is also extensively used (Kiefer, Richter, Ruscha).
With more and more artists using ephemeral and digital media the whole question of originality is a topical issue in urgent need of revision. This exhibition celebrates creative actions which are sometimes singular and sometimes not. Sometimes made by one person sometimes by many. The aim of this exhibition is to celebrate this creativity in all its diverse physical forms, bring in together paintings, drawings, prints, books and sculptures.
